In 1849, Nathaniel Cooke registered design number 58,607 under the British Ornamental Designs Act for "an ornamental design for a set of chess-men" at 198 Strand, London. This is how the iconic Staunton chessmen came into being. The designing rights were licensed to the renowned wood and ivory turning firm founded in 1795, John Jacques of London, which is still in operation today.
The original "Cooke" design of Staunton chessmen is renowned for its exquisite detail and impeccable craftsmanship. These reproduction JJ Cooke pieces are meticulously handcrafted from the finest ebony and boxwood by the skilled artisans of a renowned chess workshop. The pieces are first turned from solid wood and then intricately carved with stunning details.
With a towering 4.4-inch king and weighted pieces for perfect balance, this set is not only a coveted acquisition but also a valuable investment and cherished heirloom for generations to come.
