Rules of Chess
Chessboard Setup
- 8x8 grid (64 squares).
- Each player has 16 pieces: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 8 Pawns.
Piece Placement
- Rooks in corners, then Knights, Bishops.
- Queen on her colour, King next to her.
- Pawns in front row.
Objective
- Checkmate your opponent’s King (put it in a position where it can’t escape).
How Pieces Move
- Pawns: Move 1 square forward (2 on first move), capture diagonally.
- Rooks: Move in straight lines (up, down, left, right).
- Knights: Move in an "L" shape, jump over pieces.
- Bishops: Move diagonally.
- Queen: Moves in any straight line (rows, columns, diagonals).
- King: Moves 1 square in any direction.
Special Moves
- Castling: King and Rook move together (specific conditions apply).
- En passant: Special pawn capture.
- Pawn Promotion: Pawn reaches the other side and becomes a Queen or other piece.
Game End
- Win: Checkmate opponent’s King.
- Draw: Stalemate or no possible checkmate.
